Palm Springs offers a plethora of opportunities for gourmet dining. We suggest you consult this article instead of a local cab driver for culinary advice. Mel Haber, owner of the glamorous restaurant, Melvyn's, relates the following story in his book, Bedtime Stories of the Legendary Ingleside Inn:

Melvyn's Restaurant is a favorite hangout of Hollywood celebrities, as photographs on the walls attest.

The restaurant offers gourmet dining with a continental touch. The lavish menu features entrées such as Chateaubriand Bouquetière, Roast Rack of Lamb, and Veal Ingleside - their famous signature creation. Entrée prices range from $20-$35. The restaurant serves dinner every day from 6 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. and lunch Mon-Fri from 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Don't miss their Champagne Brunch, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Reservations recommended. For true European ambiance and authentic Provençale cuisine, don't miss La Provence. The chef, Clay Arkless, produces masterpieces for the palate. His specialties include Petite Bouillabaisse, Paella Valencienne, and Roasted Blackened Sea Bass on a bed of lentils with a beurre-blanc sauce. Entrées run from $10-$25. Guests can dine on the air-conditioned veranda and enjoy the vista of the San Jacinto Mountains and street life on Palm Canyon Drive. Open daily 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. 254 N. Palm Canyon Drive, 2nd floor. Sorrentino's Sea Food House, a favorite of the late Frank Sinatra, offers exquisite seafood in Palm Springs with an Italian flair. The Sorrentino family is in their 54th year of business serving seafood. Their restaurant has been a favorite in Palm Springs since the family moved here 36 years ago. Bill Sorrentino recommends the seafood special, an assortment of crustaceans on a bed of linguini with a white creamy garlic sauce. Entrées are $10-$35. Reservations are recommended. At St. James at the Vineyard, Chef Johannes Bacher prepares fine, spice-influenced cuisine with an Asian touch. The exotic décor reveals the background of owner James Offord, who has traveled the world in search of culinary knowledge and artifacts for the benefit of his lucky guests. Dine in the Green room with Persian carpets and a fireplace, or enjoy the Red room with a view onto an expansive patio in the style of an Italian Villa. Peruse the wine collection, winner of Wine Spectator's "Award of Excellence," in a Wine Room adorned with Golden Buddhas.

The restaurant specializes in a full spectrum of curries from spicy to sweet. Other entrées include Bouillabaisse Burmese with seafood and exotic spices, Grilled Lamb Rack Mediterranean, Broiled Ostrich Tenderloin, and a selection of pastas. Try their Pepper Seared Venison Loin or Shrimp Bangkok appetizers. Entrées are $18-$36, appetizers $7-$16. Open 6 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Tue-Thu, 6 p.m. - 11 p.m. Fri-Sun.
